Bullying and GLSEN

Hyperlinks:
One topic that interested me in the GLSEN website was there efforts to end bullying agaisnt gays and lesbians. They have a number of resources to help teachers to understand how bullying is a big problem in school especially against gays and lesibians. On this page there is a list of articles and websites that are all devoted ending bullying agaisnt gays and lesibians. These websites help to make teachers more aware of the issues that gays and lesbians face when going to school.
One huge problem that arises with bullying in schools, is that it often goes overlooked by teachers. One website suggests that teachers are not always the best at noticing how prevelent bullying is in schools. This website is a great site for both teachers and students to learn how to handle bullying in schools.

This is a video comiplation clips of The Ellen DeGeneres show, in which Ellen talks about the struggles that gays and lesbians face by being bullied. One clip is of a women whos son tooks his own life after being bullied in school for being gay. She mentions how hard it was for him to tell his mother and teachers that he was being bullied because he was asshamed and afraid that he would get picked on even more.

I thought that all the things i found were very inspiring. It really makes you think about the way you act in social environments. It's good to know that people are really adamant about ending bullying and it's nice seeing there is a reference for tachers to help stop bullying in schools.

  1. I really liked your youtube video and ended up using one like it for my piece. I think Ellen DeGeneres does a good job hitting the main points without making it seem like its a problem. She just makes sure her audience realizes what is going on in the world and that each person has the chance to help in fixing it.

  2. I love that the website had so much stuff to help teachers understand the problems of bullying. I believe that knowledge is power and maybe this info will really help change things. Even if it is only in one school or one class room, anything helps!

  3. Agreed, LBGT students need some sort of safe place to go in school when they are being bullied and having an adult ally really makes a huge difference. Having that can make or break if a student shows up to school. When my old high school did the Day of Silence, which is when some student choose to remain silent for the entire school day to represent the LBGT students who were beaten, bullied, and killed who didn't have a voice, the GSA advisor told us if we needed to or ever needed to, we could use his room as a place to take five, which really helped because not so many teachers would be so understanding.

  4. I really like your websites that you included in your blog. I believe that teachers also have a huge part in bullying because they are the ones who have to recognize it and stop it before it gets even worse. I also think that by having a Gay Straight Alliance program would also be helpful to the students and faculty. I remember in 8th grade my history teacher gave us a huge lecture on using the word fag. Back then I didn't realize how much of an issue it was but as I got older I realized that using that word wasn't a joke and it could really hurt someones feelings.
